“Westfield Specialty and I have been trying to make sure we are opportunistic in the marketplace and that has allowed us to grow profitably and create a broader and more diversified portfolio”

After a successful 12-year banking career, Michael Mankin’s leap of faith into the broking world evolved into a journey marked by milestones, including prestigious awards, fast business growth, and a reputation for delivering top-tier client service.
As director and finance broker at Mankin Finance, his all-encompassing people-first approach enables him to build positive relationships and networks that drive client loyalty, foster collaboration, and support long-term business growth.
“I am genuinely passionate about learning from and about other people,” he says.
In less than two years, Mankin’s significant contributions to the finance and broking industry have earned him accolades, including as one of MPA’s Rising Stars of 2025, winning the Rising Star of the Year at the 2024 Australian Broking Awards, and being named Most Valuable Partner by LoanOptions.ai in 2024.
He considers his most significant career achievements to be hiring his first loan support employee and hitting 50 five-star Google reviews within the first three months of launching Mankin Finance.
Managing his time and resources to explore all the industry’s opportunities and responsibilities can be challenging. However, Mankin focuses on finding the capacity to balance these competing demands without compromising the quality of his work or service.
He prides himself on being self-aware, diligent and caring, and acknowledges his role’s impact on his clients when pursuing their goals.
“It’s a true privilege to have this responsibility and opportunity to work with so many people,” he explains. “In this career, you can track your progress and see the impact of every investment you put into it.”
Mankin’s more than a decade of banking experience at St. George, Westpac, and CBA, primarily, shored up his leadership skills in roles across residential, commercial and corporate lending.
That exposure to all three lending tiers taught him how to connect with people authentically and build mutually beneficial partnerships. He credits his fast growth and early success to his people skills and problem-solving abilities.
“I have always said people first, and the rest will follow. In leadership, this means asking questions, connecting one-on-one or in group settings with your team, and helping team members become the best version of themselves,” he says.
“In broking, it’s about asking the right questions to understand the customer’s wants and needs and guiding them through this discovery process of choosing the best lender, product, or property to build their wealth.”
For the past eight years, Mankin’s mentors have added immense value to his career through their insights, such as one of the top brokers at St. George, who shared his processes, keys to success, and analysed how Mankin Finance could keep its momentum going.
“I am a massive believer in always having a coach or mentor in your life,” he says.
Mankin’s relative inexperience has proven advantageous, allowing him to approach the industry with a beginner’s mindset, making it easier to learn from others.
He highlights the differences between banking and broking, noting that while time in banking is valuable, understanding how corporate and small business environments differ is essential. This perspective has helped him transfer skills and continuously build his expertise as a broker and problem-solver who prioritises his network and clients.
