“I can take something complex and make it simple; no grey areas”
Peter Vassilis,
Black and White Finance
Loan volume earned Peter Vassilis his place on MPA’s Top 100 Brokers of 2025, but the way he works with clients is what defines his business.
He built Black and White Finance from a bedroom operation into a brokerage with more than 400 Google reviews and zero complaints by keeping the work simple, organised and centred on people. Clients talk about the experience because they feel understood, and the guidance they receive is clear enough to act on.
Vassilis didn’t plan a broking career from the start. He joined an accounting firm after school and realised quickly that the work didn’t suit him. Property and lending made more sense. He liked the way conversations shaped outcomes.
Nearly 20 years ago, a business and life coach helped him see the long game in the industry. The coach still attends Black and White Finance’s annual conferences and planning sessions, giving the team a moment each year to reset direction and check what needs to change. He says those sessions helped him build a deliberate path rather than drift from one role to another.
Growth created its own set of challenges as the brokerage expanded, the client base widened, and family time became harder to protect. Vassilis solved that with structure. He built firm routines, set clear expectations and made accountability part of the day-to-day rhythm.

He documents how files should move and prioritises tasks, so nothing falls through the cracks. That level of order is how he maintains the brokerage’s 11/10 service standard while still meeting demand.
His most notable strength is communication. Clients know exactly where they stand because he breaks information down into plain language.
“I can take something complex and make it simple; no grey areas,” he says. The result is clients who feel calm and in control, and those feelings carry through the entire process.
He traces that mindset back to his upbringing. “Show me the people you hang around with and I’ll tell you who you are,” his mum told him. It guides how he hires, mentors and builds culture.
Most of the firm’s business comes through referrals. Vassilis prefers that to advertising because it reflects genuine trust. He and his team create short videos, write straightforward blogs and give clients strategic property guidance without inflating expectations.
Lender and partner relationships support the pipeline, but retention comes from contact. The team reaches out after settlement, runs repricing and reviews every six months and offers guidance at each milestone. Borrowers never need to chase information.
The past year showed what this model can produce. The team recorded consistent quarterly growth, boosted referral volume, improved its client journey and trained regularly to keep standards high. Internal systems became more efficient, and the culture strengthened around care for clients and colleagues.
Vassilis says the next phase is about going a step further for the people they serve. He is hiring advisers who work the same way he does and adding more education for clients and staff.
His targets relate to how people feel in the process, which include informed, supported and certain about their next move because that is the measure that has carried the business from the beginning.
