“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”

Lara Jane Maloney is passionate about normalising the practice of having a financial adviser so that everyone can make intentional choices to create a lifestyle by design rather than by default.
After travelling and living in many global locales, Maloney returned to New Zealand and earned a finance-focused MBA with distinction. She joined MyFuture when it launched in 2016 and took over ownership in 2020. Since then, she has never looked back.
Maloney counts running her own business among her most significant achievements, as is maintaining the requisite qualifications to excel in her financial adviser role.
“My biggest challenge is normalising having a financial adviser,” she says. “Most people have the misconception that they need established wealth to have a financial adviser, but that’s not true. From the moment you start earning money, you can benefit from having a personal financial adviser on your team, helping you get clear on your financial goals, developing a plan to achieve those goals and, most importantly, working with you over the long term to keep you on track to achieve those goals.”
NZ Adviser recognised Maloney as an Elite Woman of 2024 for her outstanding success and industry influence.
Guided by a desire to help clients achieve financial freedom through long-term planning, she often enlists third parties such as mortgage brokers, accountants, lawyers and other finance professionals. She has developed a reputation for strongly advocating on behalf of clients and never takes ‘no’ for an answer.
“If we know, conceptually, that something can be done and we get a ‘no’ from someone, we shop around until we find someone with the right skills, experience and networks to get a ‘yes’ for the client,” she says. “Sometimes it can take months, even years, to get things in place for clients, but we never give up and always get there in the end.”
As a recognised Elite Woman, Maloney is an inspiration to aspiring female leaders in finance. As a mother of two young children, she balances her career and family life with aplomb. Working reduced hours when necessary and prioritising quality time at home has enabled her to thrive over the years.
Another aspect of her ability to stand out in a competitive arena has been the mentorship she has received, which she credits as instrumental to how far she has come. With gratitude, she highlights the importance of giving back to help other young people flourish.
“I was fortunate that MyFuture provides a childcare subsidy, which helps support and encourage our female advisers to return to work in whatever capacity is right for them in their own time,” she says.
Outside of MyFuture, Maloney founded and is actively involved in the non-profit Y for YOUTH, which strives to reduce the country’s youth suicide statistics by creating sustainable funding for youth organisations.
There’s no stopping her dedication to making a difference. Driven by a commitment to excellence, attention to detail and a big-picture view, having a financial adviser will be just as normal as having a family doctor.
