Rod Schubert has over two decades of experience in the financial services industry. His passion has always been numbers in general. Schubert has owned and sold several properties, been involved in major renovations and learned a great deal about property by being involved in it, let alone seeing simple to extremely complex finance scenarios land on his desk daily. He enjoys a good challenge.
While advising clients is his passion, Schubert also loves mentoring his adviser team and shaping the direction of RSFA to better serve its clientele.

Cam Sinclair grew up in Central Auckland and attended Mount Albert Grammar School, becoming a prefect and first 11 captain in his final year. He excelled in math and economics in high school.
Sinclair lived in the United States for four years on a football scholarship at the University of Indiana, completing a degree in finance while minoring in economics and graduating with an A average GPA. Post-university, he worked for a credit union for one year before returning to New Zealand.
Finding his niche with RSFA, Sinclair’s aim is to secure the best and most suitable finance terms, providing sound advice with the backing of experienced company director Rod Schubert.

While on this side of the lending equation, Helen Grant gained 20 years’ experience in borrowing for her own homes, investment properties and renovations.
Her background is varied, ranging from IT project management to kinesiopractic wellbeing and coaching. There is a common thread: a clear intention and passion to empower others to create and live the lives of their dreams – becoming a financial adviser is one further step towards this intention.
On a personal note, Grant is Kiwi-born and raised in Christchurch. She lives north of Auckland with her two teen sons and three dogs. She has successfully navigated a relationship separation and emerged with financial independence.

For the second year running, Shielded Insurance Brokers has claimed the number-one spot among IB’s Top Brokerages. In 2020, it was record-setting growth that drove the company’s impressive success. This year, says managing director Stuart Brady, the key ingredient behind the win is the Shielded culture. Brady is proud of the shared vision for constant improvement across all aspects of the business. “We are thrilled to take out the win again, and it’s hats off to the team for their hard work over the past year,” he says.
Anne Zablan-Balila
Mortgage Adviser
Anne Zablan-Balila, who was born and raised in the Philippines, had little knowledge of the New Zealand mortgage industry, as do the majority of first-time home buyers. Because of this, she rapidly became motivated to study and learn.
Zablan-Balila was formerly in the healthcare sector, working as a registered nurse in Saudi Arabia in a step-down intensive care unit for five years. She loves helping others, although she feels like this routine is not for her and seeks a more technical-based career path.
Since she started with a limited knowledge of industry jargon, Zablan-Balila can confidently help her clients. She also got a handle on general insurance underwriting, which can be useful in client conversations.

“It is a priority for us to continue to tap the unmet needs of our clients and grow with them to understand how to service them properly and give them what they need in this ever-changing landscape”
Vivianne Gauci,
HomeEquity Bank
A customer-first mindset is at the heart of everything at Rod Schubert Financial Advice (RSFA).
“We feel it frustrating when you are not getting the service you desire – we understand the impact that can have on our clients,” says sole Director and Adviser Rod Schubert at RSFA.
“When a new or existing client reaches out to us, whether under financial duress or simply wanting enhanced finance solutions, our team digs deep, all hands on deck, to deliver the desired outcome.”
Schubert took a chance in 2020 to scale up his operation from a one-man show to a boutique brokerage and the company has blossomed over the last 12 months to be named as one of 16 New Zealand Adviser Fast Brokerages this year. It now has a team of five advisers, two of whom were named as NZA Rising Stars in 2022.
From the outset, Schubert realised that service, or the perception of it, can vary widely from client to client. He decided the best way to cover all bases is to exceed expectations and provide advice that has a lasting impact as reflected by the company motto “Real advice, in really easy-to-understand terms”.
That advice is also tailored to different branches of the financial advice tree; part of the ethos of casting a wider net to make sure that RSFA services have as much beneficial impact on the financial standing of clients as possible.
“We are working in a considered way to better serve our clients in more areas, so we may professionally assist them holistically although we are more than happy to look at one particular need.”
Aside from offering mortgage lending, life and health risk insurance, RSFA has multiple KiwiSaver agencies in place and is in the process of setting up an investment arm for managed funds. It also has professional networks in general insurance to cater to domestic and commercial needs – a real one-stop shop.
Schubert is savvy enough to know that there are many levels of financial knowledge in the communities that he serves and getting the message across in present-day New Zealand requires a multi-lingual approach.
One of the two Rising Stars at the firm is a Tagalog-speaking “superstar” adviser according to Schubert. Anne Zablan-Balila, based in Christchurch (although assisting clients nationwide), can explain to clients the intricacies of lending lingo in their native language, and to a growing clientele.
Suffice to say, language skills at RSFA are important to its continued growth.
“We are looking at in particular at Tongan/Samoan, Mandarin or Hindi/Punjabi-speaking mortgage adviser applicants moving into 2023 and are excited about this prospect,” says Schubert.
One example of the one-stop shop aspect can be seen in Schubert’s plans to take on a specialist life and health risk insurance adviser. People who take out a mortgage are often also in the market for life and health insurance to help safeguard their investment, and Schubert has seen a pick-up in demand for these services, which he says go hand in hand with lending and are completely necessary for any clients wanting to thoughtfully protect their personal and family risk profile.
“I am looking for a specialist risk insurance adviser to complement our existing structure with a stronger focus on the holistic approach we wish to continue” he says.
He also credits strong back-office support and hiring the right people for the firm’s speedy rise in 2022.
“While I am exceptionally proud of my talented team of advisers, excellent administrative support was also vital to our growth,” he says.
“I found that a VA (Virtual Assistant) was a game changer.”
This aspect of RSFA’s success can also be seen in its marketing, as a new social media and marketing expert precipitated “a significant leap forward” with strategic plans and content development.
“We have grown our social media and marketing platform after a fairly innocuous start, and this year launched ‘Finance Today with RSFA’, an audio podcast with episodes being added regularly,” says Schubert.
Bringing in this degree of change in a short and busy period has had its challenges, particularly on the IT front as staff were required to learn new systems on the go while maintaining high levels of client care and service.
Changes to CRM systems across the entire business suite of products that RSFA offers as well as enhancements to the administration side to keep up with the pace and volume of client interest were also introduced to better support the adviser team.
Schubert sees the success of 2022 as laying the groundwork for a robust 2023 in what is likely to be a different kind of economy. Turnover (company revenue) at RSFA topped $600,000 last year and he has his sights set on the next milestone of $1m.
“We feel that this is possible in the next year as a stretch goal, however within two years as a firm target – I feel we have the right baseline to realistically hit our financial targets,” says Schubert, adding that he likes a good challenge.
But as always, the customer comes first. RSFA wants to leave the world in a better financial state than it found it – a kind of financial environmentalism, if you will.
“My favourite part of being in finance is the satisfaction of knowing our clients are in a better position than when they first approached us,” says Schubert.
