“No matter how many clients I have, I make sure to call each one personally every quarter. It’s a chance to not only update them on their portfolio, but also check on how they’re doing personally”
Kelvin Rampersad,
Carte Wealth Management
Since graduating from high school in 2005, Liam Bratton has been helping Kiwis secure mortgages by providing quality, independent advice and sharing in the often-emotional experience of buying a home.
No question is off-limits for the specialist mortgage adviser and managing director at Naked Finance, as he takes pride in educating his clients about the mortgage market so they have every tool necessary to realise their dream of home ownership.
“Over the 20 years I have been in finance, it still astounds me the pace at which the financial outcomes among New Zealanders have worsened,” Bratton says. “The average age of first-home ownership has shot up dramatically, which means Kiwis are clearing out their KiwiSavers later, leaving them less time to build it back up, and mortgage terms are finishing well into retirement for most.”
To counter that reality, he and his team work diligently to ensure the brokerage’s clients understand their potential and what the missed opportunity might look like should they continue their current trajectory. By teaching clients how to make small but powerful changes, Bratton ensures every dollar clients earn goes towards a life they deserve.
His outstanding commitment to exceptional client service and satisfaction garnered him a place on NZA’s inaugural list of the Top 25 Brokers of 2024. Bratton’s top performance also earned him the Young Gun of the Year award in 2020.
He considers the crowning moment of his career to be assisting families that are the first in many generations to buy a home, helping them navigate the complex mortgage world and positioning them to create generational wealth, which ranks a close second.
The most significant challenge in his current role is that he wears many hats at the brokerage. He overcomes this by fostering a work environment and culture that is rewarding and fulfilling and surrounding himself with first-rate mortgage professionals to whom he can delegate tasks.
Building on this, Bratton emphasises an approach that puts clients at the centre of his business philosophy. He actively seeks initiatives that improve Kiwis’ long-range financial outcomes, such as participating at Baby Expo and helping people open kids’ KiwiSavers.
He has also heavily invested in staffing and client-facing software, which integrates all business areas and allows advisers to process applications seamlessly.
“Clients are not dealing with a jack of all trades,” he says. “Individual specialists have access to the same data to make the process easy for clients.”
Bratton has set his sights on serving large employers, particularly emergency workers facing financial challenges. He aims to help them stay in New Zealand and achieve their financial objectives, a goal he believes he can achieve due to his unique approach and dedication.
Enhancing the skills of the brokerage’s mortgage advisers is also an ongoing priority. By the end of 2024, Bratton aims for each team member to write over $100 million in mortgages by fostering a supportive environment where they can thrive.
Outside the office, Bratton enjoys cruising the countryside in his classic BMW with his three daughters, hitting the links, or grabbing a fishing rod to relax in nature.
