“My strongest professional quality is my ability to build trust and long-term relationships, whether with clients, colleagues, or stakeholders”
Danny Ibrahim,
KeyRate Mortgage
For Scott Jackson, success as a mortgage adviser comes down to something simple. “I treat every enquiry like it’s a million-dollar deal,” he says.
That philosophy has helped him build a trusted Mike Pero Mortgages franchise in Nelson, where clients know they can count on him for straight answers and real results. Jackson’s approach has earned him a place on NZ Adviser’s Top Adviser list for 2025, marking five consecutive years of recognition.
His path into the industry began with a role as a BDM for Mike Pero Mortgages. He supported brokers across regions as far apart as Gisborne and Invercargill. From early on, he paid close attention to what made top advisers stand out. “I quickly identified the traits of our top advisors and knew this was a role I would love,” he says.
That insight set him on a path that combined his 25 years of finance experience with a passion to help clients reach their property and financial goals. At the heart of Jackson’s work is a genuine desire to deliver. “As corny as it sounds, I genuinely want to make every customer’s experience a great one, so this drives me to put in the hours needed to be successful in our industry,” he says.
That dedication shows in the results. Every client receives a Trustpilot survey from Mike Pero’s head office. Jackson’s reviews are all five-star. In a small region such as Nelson and Tasman, that kind of consistent feedback speaks volumes. “You can’t hide from bad service,” he says.
Jackson’s business continues to grow thanks to client referrals, local marketing and sponsorships that keep his name top of mind in the community. Regular communication helps him maintain strong relationships with existing clients.
When it comes to product knowledge, he also keeps it simple. He attends every bank training session, meets with BDMs whenever he can and makes sure each application goes to the most suitable lender. That approach keeps him across lender policies and helps ensure the right outcome for clients.
In a high-volume business, staying on top of contract deadlines requires serious focus. Jackson credits strong internal systems and a capable team. “I learned how crucial it is to have robust internal systems and a great team to operate them,” he says, adding that his strategy for success hasn’t changed. “Doing the basics right, treating every client like they are my only client, communicating well, building strong relationships with our lending panel and doing the right thing for each client.”
Jackson says he is happy with how the business is tracking. He strives to remain the top-producing adviser in the region by consistently delivering exceptional results for every client. For him, mortgage advice is about helping people. He draws on his expertise to save clients time, stress and money. He listens carefully, asks the right questions and recommends tailored solutions.
He sums it up plainly. “Working with me couldn’t be easier. We meet at a time and place convenient to you (and online, too),” he says. “I will answer all your questions and then go away to find the best solution for you. Simple.”
Outside of work, Jackson enjoys time with his family, travelling and taking his classic Mustang for a cruise. Having grown up in Canterbury and spent every Christmas in Nelson, he says he feels lucky to now call Nelson home.
