Profile
Settling $1 billion in residential lending is a milestone few advisers reach. Cameron Muggeridge did it in under five years, toppling the timeframe set by his own business partner and building the figure off close to 2,000 settlements. The pace is what earned the Loan Market Central senior mortgage adviser a place on NZ Adviser’s Top Advisers, and it reflects years of accumulated trust rather than a single fast run.
His route into lending was not planned. Muggeridge studied geophysics and quickly decided that the prospects of potentially spending months offshore on boats or in mines were not for him. He wanted a career with the upside to match his work ethic, and financial services offered it. The turning point came when he joined Cameron Marcroft, his now business partner, who needed a hand with the business he had just started.
Muggeridge credits his command of the market to sheer volume and repetition rather than theory. “Product expertise does not come from just reading a bank's policy manual; it comes from testing its boundaries,” he says. Having advocated for borrowers who fall outside standard lending criteria, he has learned where the real flexibility sits.
Leadership is the quality Muggeridge values most in himself. “My strongest professional quality is my ability to lead both clients and staff,” he says. For him, it comes down to guidance that helps clients and colleagues navigate a deal, the confidence to reassure and empower his team and clarity in how he communicates.
Securing an approval and a sharp rate is only the starting point. Muggeridge measures true delivery by whether clients understand the structure behind their loan and how it supports their long-term strategy.
“Our goal is to make the finance the most stress-free part of the entire transaction,” he says. His business has grown through service rather than marketing, on the principle that consistency builds trust and trust drives referrals.
As for the strength of the past 12 months, he is quick to trace it back to earlier groundwork. He says, “Our growth came from compounding micro-improvements across core areas,” describing 12 to 18 months of refining communication, sharpening operations and lifting the team's technical understanding before the volume arrived.
His focus now is shifting from personal production towards leadership. As a partner at his firm, Muggeridge wants to develop the advisers around him and grow the business without diluting its standards.
“By building a stronger, highly capable team, we can scale our total business volume and help more New Zealanders, while ensuring our standard of service remains completely uncompromised,” he says.
