Profile
More than 550 SWIFT Mortgages clients have the same gift from their adviser growing in their backyards: a lemon tree. For founder Mohammed Izaz Hussein, the trees say a lot about how he works: plant something early, and it keeps giving long after the deal is done.
That relationship-first instinct has earned Hussein a place among NZ Adviser’s Top Brokers for 2026, a prestigious list decided by how clients rate their adviser’s service rather than the size of the loan book.
Behind his standout year, Hussein points to one factor above all: consistency, delivered by a team he credits as readily as himself. “Success is never achieved by one individual,” he says.
His philosophy was forged the hard way. In 2008, Hussein bought his first home and made mistakes he still remembers. Those missteps, he says, became some of his greatest lessons, teaching him the value of good advice and giving him empathy for how overwhelming and emotional property decisions can be.
After spending more than a decade in banking, Hussein founded SWIFT Mortgages in 2013 from his dining table with one vision: “to help Kiwi families avoid the mistakes I made and to provide guidance that puts their interests first.”

Thirteen years on, the business has grown, but his involvement has not shrunk. Hussein still personally handles each client from the first conversation through to settlement and beyond, refusing to hand key parts of the process to a third person. “I never want clients to feel like a number in a system,” he explains. The challenge, he admits, is protecting that personal touch as SWIFT scales. “Growth is exciting, but growth without culture can be dangerous.”
If trust is the currency of his industry, Hussein has made it his specialty. He puts his strongest professional quality down to the ability to build it by listening first and following through. “Trust isn’t built through transactions; it’s forged through consistency, honesty and doing what you say you will do.”
His proudest achievement is not the awards or the numbers, but a business that people trust, reflected in more than 400 5-Star Google reviews and years of referrals. The SWIFT Lemon Tree initiative, which began as a simple thank you, even saw the firm named a finalist for Excellence in Innovation at the 2024 2degrees Auckland Business Awards.
The plan from here is not a bigger SWIFT so much as a better one. Hussein wants to serve more families while keeping that personal experience intact, expanding the firm’s mortgage, insurance and KiwiSaver advice across New Zealand.
He adds, “Our goal is not simply to grow bigger; it is to grow better while continuing to help Kiwi families build their nests with confidence.”
