Profile
For much of his career, Shayaz Khan has led and managed teams, but becoming a mortgage adviser meant taking a different path – stepping into a far more hands-on role and personally guiding clients through every stage of their journey.
“Becoming an adviser required me to be much more involved in every step of the client journey, from understanding clients’ goals and structuring applications to negotiating with lenders and guiding them through to settlement,” he says.
Shayaz did not set out to work in mortgages, but he always wanted a profession where he could help people achieve important life goals. Once in the industry, he saw the impact he could make and developed a passion for helping families build wealth through homeownership and property investment. From there, he committed to building a business centred on trust, service and long-term relationships.
That decision has paid off. The director and senior mortgage adviser at Loan Market in Auckland has been named one of NZ Adviser’s Top Brokers for 2026, an honour driven by client nominations and service quality rather than revenue.
Shayaz finds awards gratifying, but his proudest achievement is the referral-based business he has built, which has grown strongly through repeat clients and word of mouth. “Knowing that clients trust me enough to recommend my services to their family, friends and colleagues is the most meaningful measure of success,” he explains.
He now combines his management background with hands-on lending expertise to guide clients through what can often be a complex process. His strongest quality, he says, is putting clients first, whether by solving a difficult lending scenario, negotiating with a lender or simply being available when guidance is needed.
He credits his strong run over the past year to one professional quality. “The key reason behind my success has been consistency.” Through changing lending policies and a challenging period for borrowers, he remained committed to delivering reliable service and maintaining strong lender relationships, while his referral pipeline continued to grow.
For Shayaz, the emotional core of the job is simple. “What gives me the greatest satisfaction is helping people achieve homeownership and, quite literally, putting a roof over their heads,” he says.
He stays in regular contact with clients, helping them review their lending position, identify opportunities to improve their financial outcomes and ensure their mortgage continues to support their goals. “My goal is to be a trusted adviser for life, not just for a single transaction,” he adds.
Shayaz’s next chapter is about depth, not numbers. He plans to use technology to streamline administrative tasks, freeing up more time for clients. He also wants to expand his education and community work, helping more people buy a home and build wealth. Above all, he wants to continue building a reputation founded on integrity, service and relationships that outlast any loan.
